Our Heritage and Inspiration

Rooted in Utica, New York, our history inspires us to unite diverse European cultures and communities reminiscent of yesteryear. We embrace the tradition of making recipes from scratch, just as our families did for generations, honoring the timeless love for homemade food and authentic culinary experiences. Growing up, the different family corner grocery stores were the lifelines to each local neighborhood. With so many ethnic communities, we grew up believing Utica was the "Center of the Universe" as we had Italians, Irish, Jewish, Syrian, Greek, German, and Polish communities within the City Limits.

"We grew up believing Utica was the 'Center of the Universe.'"

My own family's corner local stores were my Mom's Homestead, Rosa's Italian Market on Mohawk Street, specializing in homemade pastas, imported Italian meats, and the unforgettable scent of imported olives, herbs, and spices. Some of my most memorable moments were as a little boy, when I couldn't wait for Gramma to put on my own tailored apron to work around the store every day and carry out fresh California Grapes streetside for customers to make their families' homemade Italian wines. My Dad's Homestead, Rizzuti's Italian Market on Nielsen & Square Streets was a butcher shop, grocery store, and the best candy store. Notably, Trevisani's Market on Kossuth Ave and Jay Street was also a butcher shop and grocery store that galvanized Italian traditions. Casab's Marketplace on James Street offered Syrian foods and traditional Middle Eastern specialties. Bakeries were found throughout the city, with DiVito's Bakery, Napoli's Bakery, Hemstrough Bakery, Star Bakery, and Rintrona's Bakery being particularly memorable, all featuring the infamous "Tomato Pie." Recognized as the second-oldest pizzeria in the United States, established in 1914 in Utica, New York, O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria is still successfully owned and operated by the Burlini "Chops" family.
